Still Life

This photograph was taken under candlelight with a high ISO. My intention was to capture the qualities of a still life painting of the 1700's, which depict the abundance of nature, vegetables, fruits, etc., against a neutral background. The focus is on the texture, color, play of light and simplicity of the overall composition.

Floating Flowers

Floating Flowers

The photo depicts yellow flowers floating in a bowl of water. Flowers are floated on bowls of water at the entrance of hotels, commercial buildings and in some Sri Lankan homes. It is meant to be a welcoming sign for visitors.

In this photo, the yellow flowers are called “Rukkaththana” in Sinhala. It belongs to the Alstonia family. The bark of the tree is used in medicine as an astringent, in treatment of malarial fever, chronic dysentery, diarrhoea and in snake bite; The milky juice is applied to ulcers.

The original photograph was edited to give a painted effect.
